Is now the best time to order a new pan or can I get better pricing later in the year ? Looking at a 2x4 with drop flues. Also any new upgrades in sight ?

Most vendors have a discount this time of year 10-20% off.

Traditionally this is the best time. Manufacturers are trying to keep their work force busy now, as the next season move closer, they will be busy anyways so they can be more greedy.

I was at my local Leader dealer Tuesday. I was told that the new price sheet is out and there were some significant price drops on equipment. Hmmmmm, might be time to place an order?

I'll tell you one thing I just found out first hand: it pays to shop around.

I just got two quotes for a 3x12 rig. Identically set up, stainless everything cross flow pans, etc. One quote came in $5000 higher. That's not an exaggeration.

I found that much difference in just the pans for a 3x12

Priced a 3x5 raised flue pan from leader
$7500 no float box I pickup
Smokey lake
$3500 with float box plus shipping
Thor Equipment
$2950 with float box I pickup ( w/20% early season discount)
Thor Equipment 3x5 flue plus 3 18"x3' cross flow pans and all plumbing and valves complete $4500!!!
Needless to say but I'm getting all new pans!!!!

I've seen a lot of good comments about thor recently. I priced them along with others. While they were definitely on the cheaper end, smoky came out cheaper, and it was a reasonably apples to apples setup. Plus thor was shipped to a dealer, smoky ships to me.

There probably isn't always one cheapest*, it'll come down to timing and setup.

*excluding amish and soldered setups

For You guys buying in Canada & Bringing it to the US, is there any kind of Duty you have to pay when you cross the border?

I would think any Canadian Manufacturer Should be Very competitive with the Favorable exchange rates we have right now. I would be looking at Thor & lapierre real hard if I was buying right now. Even though I like CDL products in general I wasn't that impressed with their Pans.

I am really happy with the pans I got from Smoky lake & I would by them again. At the time it was the best deal I could find. I paid less than 5k for my 2.5 x 8 pan set with same side reverse.

Arnold Raymond at Thor told me you tell customs they are for agricultural use and they charge you like $14 for some duty fee but that's it

Being that I can go pick them up and the exchange rate were the deciding factors. Also I hear nothing but good about Smokey lake but I was kinda turned off by having to deal through email alone.

Both times I picked up from Thor I was not charged duty. I told customs it was for my maple farm and no problem.

I am a leader supporter but I would say that they are a large manufacturer and they have a solid reputation that they can fall back on during the lean times. You will not find huge price drops on their equipment like some of the smaller manufacturers

That's great that they don't charge you anything, and or very little. I always wondered about that. Most of the experience I have with crossing the border was with stock car racing & they used to inventory our trailers and you better bring the same stuff back with you when you returned. They even wanted #s off the engine blocks.

Even when we brought heifers across the border when I was a kid it always seemed like a nightmare.

I hav been told there will be less "hassle" at smaller crossings.
