I am hoping I figured out how to include the attachments correctly. This is Andy's current price list and a couple pics from the shop. And yes, that's 10 flues in a 2' wide pan!

Here is his larger canner and stand, pans, float boxes, hoods, pre-heater and a small cone bottom draw off tank he had. He has had requests for draw tanks so he is experimenting with sizes on those now.

His smallest is a hobby (half pint) COMPLETE for $975. All his evaporators include stainless sides, stainless stack and fire bricks. If you jump up to a 2x6 drop flue its $2150 or raised for $2370. That's complete with a standard arch. Forced draft, hoods, pre-heaters etc are available. I'll try and scan price list tomorrow. Check my old threads for 2014 list. Prices haven't changed much.

Well Jay, I went turn key EVERYTHING from Andy. Evaporator, Canner, roof jacks, stacks, hoods etc. Spend hours there. Wish he wasn't so far away. I would go there and drink coffee every morning if he was local! Everything works out. Now to head to Rays next week and order a 500gph gas unit!

Check the "Sunrise vs A&A" thread. I put Ray Gingrich's phone number. He is a dealer and has a phone (Amish). In order to deal direct with Andy you have to write him a letter or drive there. Ray is the easiest way if you aren't within a few hours drive. If you take the trip, Andy will be out a portion of this month for his brothers wedding in Ohio. May want to wait until May.

Where is Andy's shop located? I'm in the market for a new setup and those prices you mentioned look great! I wouldn't mind stopping in to see him myself.

Potter County, PA. His address is 464 Collins Hill Road Ulysses, PA 16948 We just drove over and hoped he was there :) You can write him a letter and ask when is a good time. He does not do Saturday store hours under normal circumstances, so plan on a trip during the week.

He does rectangular (flat bottom) with a corner drain. Standard sizes are 250 through 1200 Gallon. I ordered a 750 for my releaser to sit on. Harder to clean than half rounds, but I cant afford shiny stuff with big name badges.

I have a 500 gal square tank from A&A. Basically just a stainless steel skin and I made a wooden frame for it.

If it is stainless and can be soldered, Andy will make it. Only exception I know of is he won't do round bottom tanks.
Gathering and storage Tanks , covers, evaporator covers, hoods, preheaters, custom one off ideas. He builds it all.

I copied yours. It's a 2x8 raised flue. 2x2-1/2 syrup and 2x5-1/2 flue. I went with a one piece hood coming straight across from flue pan so there will be 8 inches above syrup pan. Air tight arch with the domed grate. Pretty excited, but just realized we need a place to put it!

Just reading the price list, a 2x6 raised flue, complete, is $2370.00 Pans are 24 ga 304 stainless w/lead free solder, stainless sides on arch, comes with grates, bricks, ceramic blanket, floats, stack and fittings.
Man, the preheater and hood price is comparably low too.

Sounds like they are worth a visit, at least consideration. Thanks for posting that list.

What size/how many CFM is your forced draft fan?

Windy Acres

For now, it was just an 8" ventilator fan and planer speed control from HF, blowing through a 6" pipe under the grates with 3 rows of 3/4" holes in it

Yep, or a complete 3x12 raised flue for $5000. Not bad at all.

No, these aren't shiny rigs, and they aren't welded, but I just bought a used 4x14 for $1800 more than their new one goes for. For the record, mine is welded and shiny, though.

If I was close enough to their shop to pick up a rig from them without a long road trip, I definitely would have considered them.

Is it sturdy enough without a frame? I can't picture what this would look like without a frame it seems that it wouldn't be very stable and rather flimsy. Anyone have any pictures without frame?

I posted all these pics in Sugar House Design and Construction but figured I would update in this post as well. Since everyone asks lots of questions about not only the A&A evaporators, but the sap tanks as well I thought I would include a pick of my 750 gallon raw sap tank after the "cribbing" was built. Even after using a truckload of lumber, it's still the most economical choice for storage as far as I'm concerned. The evaporator set-up is nearly complete, with a little plumbing left to do. We are hoping to boil water before the holidays and shake down the system so we can rectify any issues before the first sugar boil.

It came with everything needed to start boiling. It took maybe 4 hours too set it up and it worked flawlessly with no leaks. Boiled about 32gph without blower. I bought it set up for a blower system and plan to run a blower next season. This is the best evaporator for the price by far. I f anyone plans on getting one to use for the 2017 season you will want to order it before Christmas though to have it by February.

I visited A&A Sheet Metal yesterday while on the Tioga/Potter Maple tour (A&A was not part of the tour) to pick up a current price list. Instead, I ordered a new arch for my pans so that maybe I can actually boil in the back pan.

Found out that Dan Miller is taking over and from the way i understand, Andy will be moving out of the area but Dan intends to continue making everything and was telling me about some of the stuff that they are thinking about adding such as a one side drawoff with reversible flow front pan and a heated bottler.

Turn around is amazing in his off season (right now). I pick up my arch next Friday and he said possible as soon as Wednesday.

I was very happy with the 2.5x10 that they made for me. I am shifting next season to mostly selling sap, but I think I will be ordering one of their 2x6 evaporators so I can still make syrup for family.

Anyone making the trip out there from the east who could haul a hood? I would love a hood from him but there is no chance I could take the 8 hrs + for a round trip. I’ve been looking for someone closer to me but have come up empty so far.

Are they getting out of the maple equipment business? It's been a couple of years since I ordered my evaporator and I wanted to order a preheater and hood from them...this is the first I've heard of them moving.

They always have been around on Sat. mornings but if you dropped them a line saying you wanted to stop by Sat. with your phone # I'm sure they would get back to you if they were not going to be there. I usually put a letter in the mail telling them when I expected to be there and tell them to let me know if it wasn't a good time. You would need to send it today or the latest tomorrow. PS I will be making cotton candy Sat. stop by and say hi.

I stopped by A&A today. They had started to make there same side draw-off front pans earlier this year. I believe that there will be one of those pans setting in my sugar shack at some point. I was quoted $150 additional (on top of the new front pan cost) for the same side draw-off.

maple flats
05-05-2018, 07:53 AM
My syrup pan is same side draw, but one draws from the channel by the flue pan and the other draws from the channel over the fill door. I wish it was 2 adjacent channels near the flue pan, that design looks best in my way of thinking. I never saw one like that until after I had 2 pans, both the design I described above.
