Hi all!

I'm new to the site and forum, lots of great information! I am looking to ramp up my operation from hobby to small commercial (450 taps or so). As such, I need to get a big kids evaporator to handle that, I've been asking for quotes from cdl, leader, and lapierre. However, I stumbled across Thor, has anyone dealt with them or use their evaps and pans? I'm thinking of a 2x8 but would a 3x10 be a better choice?

Thanks, excited to be a part of the club!

I emailed them to try to get a quote but never heard back. I've only heard good things about their stuff. I didn't try calling, but maybe that would work better.

How much time do you want to spend boiling? I've been cooking sap from 420ish taps on my 2x10 for 5 seasons now. It does the job, but I usually have a couple of long days every year. I wouldn't want anything smaller, and bigger would be better.

I'd definitely suggest a 3x10 or even a 3x12. Other than faster cooking times, another benefit to a wider rig is that you don't have to split the wood so small. If I want to max out my 2x10, I basically have to burn kindling. I suppose you could add a blower and burn bigger stuff, but I never got around to it.

Good luck with your search, and let us know what you end up with.

I ordered 3x12 pans from Thor in mid December. They called and I picked them up in early February. Very nice pans. I put them on an oil fires arch that I built right after I ordered the pan. Ihave 1850 taps on vacuum and concentrate to about 18%. The most I have made in one day this year is 58 gallons. I have not boiled more than 2.5 hours in a day. I guess I'm saying these pans might be more than you need. But it depends on how long you have to boil each day.

I have a set of 30" x 10 ' pans by them on their Tusnami arch . I Boiled raw sap from 550 taps for a few years. And it was perfect . They are very slow to respond to emails , the company is French speaking but there is a man who's works there that's is English speaking . Ask to speak with Arnold . It was well worth the wait to deal with the language barrier, quality work and I saved a ton of money over their English speaking competition. Good luck

My competition down the street has a 2 1/2 x 8 Thor evaporator. It looks like a high quality unit. The welds on the pans look good and the arch itself has very good fit and finish. He says it does about 65 gph without a hood and preheater. He's one of those type of guys that likes to exaggerate things so I don't know how accurate that number is.

Head good things about them, I think prices are better than the other big manufacturers. They didn't reply to my email, however. I got ahold of the NY dealer. I forget the exact price, but it was $400 more than an equivalent smoky lake setup. Smoky price was delivered to me. Thor price was delivered from Canada to the dealer in northern ny, then I would have to pick up. Similar setups, 2x6 drop with airtight.

Now, if I were to drive there they may be cheaper. Not going to so that from almost buffalo.

Yes they seem real decent to deal with I was thinking of going with them also.
I ended up ordering a custom 2x6 through an outfit here in Vt.
Another one is H20 innovations.

H2O was right up there with all the other major manufacturers prices.
all of them were with in a few hundred dollars of each other and if thats the case I would go with Leader and the revolution pan. one side draw!

My Thor pans were just under 1/2 of what a Leader quoted. And that is with a revolution front pan.

My Thor pans were also about half of the price I got from Leader. I always talk with Arnold Raymond.
However, they now have a few more English speaking people there. I was talking with Arnold at length at the Verona Winter Maple Conf. this past Jan. and he said he is taking a long extended trip this summer. He is traveling to Alaska and was thinking about 6-10 weeks duration. He may not be available if you try to call him.
My Thor pans are every bit as good as Leader's as far as I can tell. Thor even customized them to my specs too. I had them make my flues 10" tall (raised flues) and then had them add 4" to the overall height on both the front and back pans to contain the "jumping sap". For these changes, they only added $300 to the base prices total, not each pan, on my 3x8 set. I also have a Thor hood set, a spare front pan and a draw off tank, also made to my specs, for well under what the big guys showed as their price (mine is 3 yrs. old). Arnold even delivered it From Quebec to Central NY for $50., on his way to visit his brother (now deceased) in Florida.
