almond slices mystery

Yesterday I was prying out my taps and collecting my jugs and while walking from tree to tree I found evidence of the squirrels or chipmunks leaving little bits of what looks like almond slices but probably hickory nut-meat under each tap. Has anyone had the same experience with small rodents leaving unfinished snacks at each tree along their tap line?

Yes, they seemed to have left a little bit of tubing scraps for me to try to string up next year!
