View Full Version : Gast 2565... To much vac?

My Gast 2565 runs 28" all day... Should I keep it down to 22" with a regulator?
I have a 2" and a 4" wheel combo and pump only runs at idle can't go any lower ?? I have 150 taps on it.

I didn't know there was "to much vac" Why would you want to lower it? maybe I'm misunderstanding something here

28" is fantastic! That's what they're rated for. How many taps are on it? If you wanted to cut it back just idle the motor down a little.

Yes , the high vac is great... Pump doesn't seem to hot.. But I keep hearing that these Gast model pumps are only meant for 15-20" so most guys run them at approx... 22" to keep from hurting them. I have a regulator just not sure wether I should put it in because pump us running great at 27-28"

I would let it run. I have a 1550 that runs 22 to 23 all day and it has done that for 4 years.

I agree, my 1550 has been doing 25" all year sometimes running 48-72 hours straight. I've had no issues

Same here. 330 hours on the 1550 this year pulling 26"-27".

Someone just gave me a GAST 1550 that I want to play with - can anyone give me an idea of what rpm you have yours set up to run at? I need to get a motor and pulley's yet. Thanks in advance!!!

You can get information from the Gast website and even ask technical support that are Excellent! A lot of the pumps are designed to be direct drive using a love joy coupler and a motor rpm of 1725 with electric a little simpler than a gas engine then you will need to figure out rpms and pulley sizes.

The gast pumps are industrial and designed for continuous use with proper maintenance and they are tough they can handle 25" +.

Like Jared said the 1550 are built to run max 1725. I have mine run off a gas motor and I have my pulley arrangement set up so mine is running at 1500 +/-. I'm losing probably 1-2" of potential vac by not going to the max but I figure this way I'll air on the side of caution with my rpm, and hopefully delay any vane failures.

Just to give you an idea of the capabilities of a 1550. I have 415 taps total, on 3 1" mains. My longest main is 650' with probably 300 taps on it. My pump is 300' from my releaser, and plumbed together with a 1" pipe. I get 25" at my releaser, and I usually get 22" or so at the end of my longest main. On a good flow day I will actually have 27" at the end of my longest main. Last year on gravity I produced 2,000 gallons of sap. This year with the addition of the pump and releaser I'm over 6000 gallons, with possibly another week of our season left to go.

I guess most of the consensus is I don't need a vac regulator, just run pump at 26" all day....

Thanks so much for sharing all of this great info! - I haven't been to the Gast website yet but that will be my next stop but I wanted to ask this question - There is a small jar where it would appear oil would go - what kind of oil are you using in this? Vacuum oil or some sort of other oil?

I have been using an oil I found at the local hardware store... It's says compressor/vacuum pump oil.

Butler, You shouldn't be afraid to run that to 28" The 2565 is capable of 28 max. according to the website. Most of these pumps are used indoors and are subject to much warmer temps than the sugar woods. They are made to pull 28" 24/7. The 2565 along with only a couple others are the only pumps gast makes that are capable. The 1550 is only rated for 20" max. but they will do more as the other posts indicate. BTW. I'd still like to know how many taps you have on it. I get 24+" running 2 of them on 1400 taps. I just bought another one so next season I'll have three in that bush. Hopefully I'll be around 28" then.

Tractor Supply vacuum pump oil here. Fourteen dollars a gallon and it will last for a while. These pumps barely use oil.

That's good news.. I will run it at 27-28" then... I only have 150 taps on it this year .. Expanding to 350 next year
