I bought an 8 qt Orlon cone filter thinking I'd be expanding in future years but, for now, I'm only doing batches of a gallon or less. I feel like I'm probably losing a lot syrup, though...anyone know definitely?
Wetting and warming are supposed to help "pull syrup through" I've heard but this is what I'm looking at after a recent batch outside and inside of the larger filter:

Just rinse that sugar back into your pan.
Yup used cone filters for 4 years. Once done filtering the hot syrup I would use my scoop and keep rinsing the filters with hot sap. Will take most of the syrup out. However, if you are only producing a gallon at a time I would probably use the settling method

Not familiar with the term "settling method"...do you mind clarifying?
Basically put your unfiltered syrup in a large glass container and let it sit for a few weeks. Niter will settle out. Pour off the syrup without disturbing the stuff on the bottom

Also you can put your syrup soaked filter in a gallon sized ziplock bag and store it in the freezer till you boil again, then rinse it out in the sap.

Oh right, I thought you meant a settling method involving the filter. I've tried the settling out in containers, just too slow for me...I bottle in glass only (currently) and have also not had quite the same clarity as with a filter when just "settling."
Maybe you should look into a hand pump filter press. No more cone filters needed. Stoweski a member on this site has one for sale I believe
