I'm sick and tired of boiling 26 hours a day(who let punch 113 holes?). Seriously considering an upgrade to a 2x8(my flat plus a flue). The only thing is I like th flavors of a batch boil and have customer base that likes the dark syrup produce from from batch pan ( have a couple of guys that like it used motor oil black). I'm wondering if can put raised flues then run my front pan as a batch. This would mean that most of the boiling is done in the flue and the front would run deep, simulating the batch boil. I can't see any issues with this. Does anybody else?

Just get a really efficient arch, boil it once, thin it with water 40-1, and boil it again.

Sorry no help here, but I will be monitoring this thread to see what you hear.
This is my exact situation also and been researching the same solution. Want to use my existing 2x4 flat pan as a syrup pan and add a 2x4 raised flue behind it to cut down on hours boiling. Like you, I and those I produce for, like the batch boiled syrup, but 40 hour long boils to produce 35-40l batches is getting to be too much later in the season.
Really hoping to see responses from others that use this kind of set up.

Just add the flue pan and run both pans very deep. That'll simulate a batch boil, but speed things up some.

I can relate to the long hours. Sounds like my first year with a serious number of taps batch boiling on a woodstove. But continuous flow does not guarantee lighter syrup. My newer pan made nothing lighter than dark amber this year and last, with the exception of the first few batches last year (before the March heat wave came in). Most was/is black as night, which is good because almost everyone wants it.
