I have a homemade filter press that is copied from a 12 inch Siro filter. Im trying to filter syrup about 5 gallons at a time. The problem is its getting clogged up super fast. I started with 3 gallons and a cup of DE stirred in and the syrup was around 195 degrees. The first gallon ran through about 8 psi after recirculating for a few minutes the second was around 20 psi and about half way through the third gallon it went to 50 psi and would barely get through. Am I using too much DE or not enough? I have not pulled apart yet to see how much of the 1 micro filter cloth is covered with DE but will check when it cools a bit. Jeff

My guess is not enough but maybe someone with a siro press would know for sure. We use about 1 cup per gallon in our 7" short stack for the initial mix.

I had a Siro filter. If you only used 1 cup of DE for the 5 gallons, especially this late in the year, I think you need more. If it's a 12" press, it should hold 3 cups of DE without trouble. Rule of thumb over here is 1 cup per gallon of syrup. Your mileage may vary...

Thanks for the replies I'm going to try more DE I only used about 1 and a half cups with what turned out to be closer to 4 gallons. Jeff
