Painting C.I. Press

I have an old cast iron press with flaking paint. I'd like to strip the paint and repaint the outside. Can I use standard spray paint?

My thoughts are that if you crank it up tight and it keeps syrup on the inside while under pressure - it'll should keep paint on the outside.

I would be inclined to load papers, crank it down tight, close off the inlet and outlet, sand blast it (to avoid any chemical leaching into the casting) and then paint by hand with a good high performance latex paint. My 2¢.

That's kind of what I was thinking to, but thought I'd run it by the experts on trader and see what they have to say.
