Hello my name is Ben. I am a retired Marine and 49 years old. This was my first year making maple syrup. We made 2 gallons on a turkey fryer system. I saw a posting on Craigslist for an oil tank for $25 and could not help myself. My son and I went to pick it up and there were two tanks. Got both for $40:cool: One will become our arch and the other may become a pig cooker or farm fuel tank.

I drive around Lynchburg looking for maple trees and planning for next year.:o. The addiction is real

Thanks to everyone for sharing information and experiences. I am hooked.

Very nice.. I'm a retired Marine Corps LtCol as well.. and I'm in the process of finishing off the last of my syrup.. should total around 12 gallons. I'm running a Mason 2x6 Drop Tube here on our 63 acre farm loaded with Maples! 13888

Welcome.

And yes, it is a very addicting hobby. But in a good way.

My kids think I'm nuts because I can name the location of every sugar maple in our town.

What's wrong with that?........

I walked out into our woods yesterday, looking at taps, and realized 2 doors over, on their little private junk yard is an oil tank. This next year, I am going to do a tank arch

Quick update: took a trip to my dad's and came back with a 4'x8' sheet of stainless that is 20 or 22 gage. It came off the wall of a restaurant kitchen years ago. My micrometer measured it at .032 and I was thrilled. Has a couple of holes on one end for wall outlets, So I am planning on two flat plans (connected flow) for the top of my oil tank. 25x36 for the sap pan and 25x14 for a syrup pan. Got the fire blanket in the mail while I was gone so next stops are a metal shop for angle iron and find a welder for the stainless.

I am a novice and figuring all this out from the great things I have read on this site so all comments and input are welcome
