i made an evaporator out of a fuel oil tank, i am leaving the door open so i can set a blower right into the fire. every time i go to load wood in, i get a face full of smoke.

my question is, would extending the chimney higher help with this problem? or is it just something i have to learn to deal with?

You may need to turn off your blower when adding wood or try adding more pipe to your stack.

I think adding stack will eliminate the smoke. On my evaporator, I run high pressure air both under and over the fire and I do not need to shut off the blower to open the door. It gets turned on after about 3-5 minutes after lighting and stays on until at least 45 minutes after last fueling with no smoke out the door. On my 3x8 evaporator I have 18' of 12" stack (the 18' starts as a 6' base stack, then 12' of 12" up from there).

Put a hole under the door for your blower. Then you can close the door. Or even in the bottom under the fire

already got one, but it blows air under the fire and out the back, doesn't seem to help the fire as much as directly on the fire......maybe once i get the back end blocked off it may help alittle more

You should not be blowing into the doors. You will have no heat for the front pan. Not to mention the fire hazard. If you blow under the grate, you will need to block off the first 6 in of your grate by the door. Either with bricks or metal plate. To keep the air from going up that area.
