Is there anything you do when you remove the tap to help the tree heal? Rookie here.

Nope. Nature does the work.

The hole will always be there, it will just be grown overtop of as the tree continues to grow. The faster the tree grows (diameter), the more quickly the hole disappears. So perhaps fertilizing the tree will help it heal?

Fertilizing probably won't hurt, as long as you don't overdo it, but it has rarely been shown to help other mature trees, except in extreme deprivation situations. It would likely not be worth the investment.

The best thing you can do is to pull the spout and walk away. NEVER put anything in to plug an old taphole (or paint over an old cut limb scar) as this will impede the natural wound-response process, and if anything, add to the changes that the tree will suffer some sort of infection and decay. Nature can deal with this far better than we can.
