I have a leader 2x4 arch, and right now I run wood of assorted lengths, from 10" to 22". Is it truly better to use strictly 24" wood in this arch? or does it not really matter? Right now I get a good rolling boil in the second and third bay but not in the first or fourth, is this because of the wood that I use?

It doesn't really matter. The only consideration is that the wood not be too long to fit in without blocking the door, and then it's a matter of efficiency to fill the firebox as quickly as possible

I disagree, it definatly matters on my 2x6. I run 20" long wood. keeps the fire going evenly under the entire syrup pan. also, its best to keep the wood as close t othe fire door as possible.
