What is clearance between brick and warming pan? Any figures and results from boiling?

I left about 3 inches of space between the fire board and the bottom of the pan. I watched a video on one of the arch makers website and they bricked it up to 1 inch below the pan. So far from 60 taps I have 2.5 gallons of sap. Season may be over.
