I have one. I'm not sure if the pump actually pushes oil around, or if it just gets flung around passively when it spins. If you put your hand over the inlet it won't make any vacuum? Mine has an oil shut off valve (that I never close) in between the radiator and the pump. If you already opened it I'm not sure what else to try.

putting hand over inlet makes no difference, oil level is good when I shut it down in spring was working fine stored in garage for off season

You might have ice in the oil line feeding the pump.

I had the same symptoms with my sihi pump last season. Turned out to be a bad seal. It was sucking enough air so the fluid wouldn't draw into it.
