Some trees i have tapped flow well some weak do it move weak taps to new trees?
I noticed that some of the tress that i have tapped don't produce much sap. I have more trees that i can tap, do i move my taps or do these trees produce later in the season?
What is the science behind tapping trees?

Sebastian, if it were me I'd leave the taps in the trees and put a few additional taps into new trees. Some trees start later than others, and some just aren't big producers. If you leave the taps in and watch those trees you'll get a good idea of how they perform so that you know for next year. Since it sounds like you are at the beginning of the sugaring season in your area those "weak" taps might still be asleep.

There are books (or at last chapters) written on this subject. However to answer your first question, NO...it probably isn't necessary to move the taps. It is possible that you're just seeing differences from tree to tree, or possibly aspect (compass direction). The south sides of trees thaw out in the early season, but it takes a bit longer for the north sides to thaw out. Think of it like an ice cube with a heat lamp (the sun) hitting it from one side. The side closest to the lamp will melt faster than the other side....same thing with trees. Now before you think....gee, I should always tap on the south side....DON"T DO IT. Best to spread the taps around and generally hit all compass directions. In some years the sap may run better on the north, some on the south, and most will have little or no difference. The only time it might make sense to move taps would be if you're tapping red or silver maples....as these tend to run a bit less predictably on gravity, so sometimes you'll find a poor producer.
