Float box

So this is my first time using a float box.man I need to get used to it.first boil sucked. Second boil I was told to lowerny float so less sap comes in. But when I do my thermometer goes out of the boiling sap. Hope to get it set right soon. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated Thanks james

Lower your thermometer to within .25 inches from the bottom. set your sap level at 1.5 inches and you should be good. The float should be set to allow sap to come in to maintain that 1.5 inch sap level.

Thanks Chris but I don't think the thermometer can reach that far to the bottom. I have a 2x4 hybrid pan from smoky lake.and at 1.5 high it boils like crap I'm trying to get it at 1 .
