Today is the first boil of the year -- between 35 & 40 gallons of sap. No real changes to the barrel evaporator. We did however, spray paint our stack guy wires day-glo orange in hopes that I wouldn't run into them this year. Too late, of course, but I thought this morning that if I get longer cables I can keep the wires out of my way.

We did decide to upside our windscreen from the garden stake, tarp, and plywood attempt we made last year, which was definitely an upgrade from our first year. I bought two more sheets of plywood, cut them to half size for manageability. Gave them and some strapping hinges to my 12 year old, who designed and built our foldable, portable windscreen. We threw on some angled legs for additional support. So far, not only is it helping with the wind, but it didn't blow down in last night's gusts. Maybe next year we'll add some higher vertical slats in order to take tarp along the top which would give even better protection.

Continue to live, learn, and enjoy that maple!1339013391

Hi. I'm glad to see you're still at it. Helpers getting bigger is a plus. I'm still plugging away on projects but slower than ever. Body top half is 80 but the bottom half feels a lot older. Not on a walker yet.

Definitely still going. Though yesterday's boil was long. (Finishing inside as I type.) If it happened in the summer when it was still light at 8p, it'd be better for me... I'm definitely a morning person.

I'm hoping the winter was easier on you than last year's. I keep thinking I'll need to make some changes... And I still haven't learns how to weld. :) if I change it up I'll be in touch via pm. I hope the season is good to you.

One of the projects I'm thinking about is a preheater for the stack. What diameter is yours? Also do you dip the sap or run it in by gravity? Anything I get going will obviously be for next year.

Nice job on the wind breaks! Your doing great! The 12 year old is the key to your syrup operation! We had sever gusting winds last night too.

Chris

Impressive wind breaks - we used to use tarps strung between posts and of course they would always let go at the wrong time. We finally came up with an outdoor steam hood that sits on the pan. I works really well and have boiled in wind, rain and snow without any issues. Here is a link to the design:
