Goodmorning to all,
First of 2 questions for those in the know.
Do you get a new final filter every year or do you wash the old one?
and 2nd...I have a new stainless pan and the syrup made has a "off" taste to it. Could i contribute this to the new pan or the old filter or both?
Yes use a rayon final filter with a pre filter. thanks to all who post.

It shouldn't be necessary to get a new filter ever yr as long as it's in good shape. Boilling it in water is a good way to make sure it's clean.

Your pan shouldn't cause off flavours, unless it was treated with a preserving oil or something. Wash it up good, I'm, sure you issue will go away.

A close friend got a new pan this year and the dealer told him to boil water on it and drain it at least twice before he made syrup. So I would say that either or neither could be the cause of your off flavor. There are alot of diffrent things that cause off flavors and the only way to determine what it could be is to have someone else who is experienced tast it and then start eliminating any posible sources that you come up with.

Hey Z Driver,
Now, I am going to ask a question and I don't mean to be insulting, OK.
Did you wash the filter the last time you used it?
I only ask this because you asked "Do you get a new final filter every year or do you wash the old one?"
I wash all my filters, wool and pre-filters, everytime I use them, right after I am done. Well, let me rephrase that ...... my wife washes them!!
Again, not trying to insult you.

Even a well-washed and stored filter will pick up "off" flavors in storage. Brand new ones DEFINATELY will impart an odd flavor. We boil them for a couple hours in fresh water at the start of each season, then rinse well with fresh hot water. That'll help.
