I am considering buying a used evaporator from a friend. In my search for one, I have concentrated on set ups with stainless pans only. This one has a stainless syrup pan and an English Tin sap pan. Is this still a good way to go? Should I have any concerns? Etc.

My concerns would be leakage in the English tin pan as if it is several yrs old,they generally develop a lot of pin holes as the tin would weaken from heat and aging,i amsure that is why the front pan is stainless,burned out from heat.

English tin pans are most likely made with lead solder.

Unless it is cheap enough so that it would still be a good if you bought a new stainless flue pan for it don't buy it.

Is there a way to test for lead solder?

I believe that lead solder test kits are available but others who know will have to check in. The thing that I do know is that English tin pans were made and discontinued long before lead free solder was used in the maple industry.
