Leaking?

Probably a stupid question... But I am new at this. Is it normal to have the area of the tree below my tap look wet? I noticed this today after tapping yesterday and gave the tap a couple extra light knocks with the hammer and it did go in a little farther. Is the wetness a sign that I split the tree? That my tap just wasn't in far enough? Or another issue? Or maybe (hopefully) it's normal. Thanks in advance!

That is normal for a short time after tapping. Don't hammer them any more.

I tapped after the -20 below weekend. I tap with light wrist action then but walked my lines today after the trees have warmed up. I go around and ever so slightly give one more light tap to each spout. It works and no more wearing of tap holes but do not overseat the tap
