Today I had a little over 7 gallons of fairly clean syrup. Ran the first 4 gallons through with 5 cups of DE. Ran smooth, not much pressure build up. The remainder was hot and I just switched the hose from one pot to the next. I lacked about 3 quarts of finishing before pressure maxed out.
To much De? Or not enough? The filters had about 1/4 inch build up on them. The hollows were no where near full.

Did you ad more de to the other 3 gallons? I put a bunch in at first but always as a bit more to each batch after.

No I did not. So. I should put a little in every bit of syrup?

Yes, with that 7" short bank, you should mix about 2.5 cups of DE in 2-3 gal of HOT syrup. Then start the pump and return the filtered syrup to the mix tank until sparkley clear. Then move the discharge hose to your canner. Add more syrup to be filtered and mix in about half the rate of DE you did to coat the papers, mix well and filter. That first batch coats the papers. Then every batch after that needs some more. With a filter press, the DE does the filtering, the papers just support the DE filter cake. If you don't add more with each batch, the sugar sand coats the surface of the filter cake you formed with the first batch and then it is plugged. If you add more, the DE keeps slowly building a thicker filter cake, along with the sugar sand you are removing, but since the filter cake keeps getting thicker as you remove the niter it does not plug the surface. You should be able to filter 15-20 gal early season if the niter is light and about 10-15 gal if it is heavy. Then as the season winds down you may get even less than 10 gal before the hollow plates completely fill up.

Eric. I am thinking too much too soon. I use a cdl 7 and use a red solo cup as a measure . my finish pan holds 5 gal and I use 2 cups per batch I run thru. 2nd 5 gal 2 more solo cups . syrup has to be 200 deg min. Run the filter on bypass when starting the second batch to make sure the interior is Hot unless the 2 batches are hot at the same time. Filter presses cannot cool down between batches or you have to cycle hot syrup. You should be able to do 25 gal between changing papers unless it's a beaver sand year. Try using 2 papers each frame and a little less de. Gotta experiment a little for your soil \ mineral content and nitre.
Good luck
Mike

I have a Lapierre 4 bank and I add 1.5 cups to 4 gallon to charge press and early season syrup I add another 1.5 up to 15 to 20 gallons in early season. Later in the season, I add more DE.
