I always feel like I tap to early but this year I feel like I might be tapping to late. I'm putting my taps in tomorrow. Winthrop ME area. Any thoughts about when the right time to tap is?

I tapped last weekend and have only collected @ 300 gal. On 500 taps. Its moving but moving slow. Most of my trees are still at 1.5%. I still have to put in another 15 on gravity and about 50 on buckets.

We started on Jan. 29th and finished yesterday. We had our first boil on Feb. 7th, with 800 gals to boil off. As we all know the last two weeks haven't been ideal, but after Friday and yesterday, we'll have around 1000 +/- gallons to collect today.

Should I wait a week?

I put in my lines Friday and it was running ok. I let the first run go to ground to flush the line. Buckets are going up today. Other than the mid week storm (which I think will help stabilize the weather a little) the weather looks good.
I will have my first boil next weekend to sweeten the pans.

Ok...put in 84 buckets today and every tree was running! Let's hope the weather holds.

We finished tapping this weekend, and the sap was pouring in before we got done tapping. I would say now is the time, if you didn't tap back at the beginning of February! It's acting like the middle of the season, and it might be this year. It's never started this early, but it is now. We had to boil on Sunday, so the season has started!

Put in 140 taps over the weekend and collected 65 gallons of sap on Sunday. Should be a good run today and then I hope it slows down. Looking to boil mid week if I can get the time.
Off and running........

Ok...so I pulled 65 gallons off of 85 buckets today! Not bad considering we didn't finish putting the buckets in yesterday until around 2 pm.

Decent run here in Lewiston today. 50 taps produced about 50 gallons. First boil this weekend.

On Sunday it was coming in pretty well, and I think the last two sunny days has probably put a lot of frozen sap in the lines that will come pouring out when it warms up this week. I think we'll be boiling big time when it all pours out!

efoyt, i am also in winthrop so I assume similar weather. Ran pretty well over the weekend, little less than a gallon a tap but I do have quite a bit in shade. Dont know about you but I always seem to run a little later on the flow compared to others, not sure if it is lake effect chill or just too much shade.

My Winthrop taps tend to run before my Monmouth taps. My Winthrop trees get more sun and have a lot more space to spread out. My Monmouth taps are more shaded and in the woods. I think sunlight has a lot to do with it. Seems like a tree in a field will always run before a tree in the woods.

52 gallons off of 60 taps in Durham (some barely ran tho) yesterday but sugar content has been low this year. 2% or a wee bit under when typically we get 3-3.5
