We got some serious global warming up here.
It got down to 0.3 this morning for a low, and they are saying wind chill is -20 to -30 all day today. Gusting winds over 35mph.
I think after this spell of global warming we are going to have to redrill all my taps since they will be full of bacteria.
Flood gates are gonna open after this weekend.

Hey they just said on the tube that global warming is going to cause a 7 degree increase in 10 years.
Now, I don't want to sound like I'm not into the environment but I'll take that 7 degrees right now!!
Right now it's 0.9 degrees.
Looks like a small run Saturday and even better Sunday and Monday, possibly Tuesday, but temps are going to drop a bit.
At this point I'll take 30 degrees.
Keep warm everyone!!

Weather man says -15 to -25 in Lincoln VT . It may take the trees a few days to thaw out. I think this snow cover may come in handy if it warms up for a few days, keep the ground insulated from the sun. Anybody got any thoughts on this. I knew an old guy that used to keep imaculate records of the weather from season to season and then look back for similar weather patterns and see what they made for syrup that year. I wish I kept records but I guess I just haven't found the time. The old timers were pretty attuned to their enviornment Because most of them were farmers and maple was a cash crop. So keeping an eye on the weather was a prudent thing to do, If you record the weather long enough, patterns will develope which might or might not help to predict the weather. Just got back from my "Bucket Patrol", 12 out of 80 buckets off the hook, not bad for the wind we have been experiencing.
Got to love the land owners, they pick my stuff up and put in a safe place ( I think the reason is the syrup!).
15 above here with a 5-7 mph wind, still **** cold!
Forecast from the National Weather Service, Gray, Maine is; Sat. 37, Sun. 51, Mon. 50, Tues. 50, this is for here, however, in their discussions it leans more towards mid to upper 40's.
Ok, so here we go, no one in southern and central NH & Vt. will be on this site for at least 4 days!
Now that's a good thing!
Keeping warm.

That tree never gave a drop during the warm last week. I figured it dried up but now today sunny and temp holding at 20 all day its dripping. Must br the cold frozen spile keeps them from dripping?

Wow 8 degrees above zero this morning. I was thinking about blowing off work today and going to the beach, but then it started snowing, guess I'll wait acouple days. Right back in the deep freeze tonight though. If tke long range is anywhere near right we may be very busy next week. Bring it on, looks like it may not freeze Tues. night, then the weather gets right again. Time will tell, have a good day all !
9 below here last night. We have a 50 gallon ice cube in the tank from last week's run. I hope it defrosts some time soon. It'll keep the rest of the sap cool for quite a while, I suppose. Maybe we'll get a run this weekend. The trees were ready to go. We'll see what happens. It's the beginning of the season still. Long range forecasts say the temps are warming up next week.

Good Morning all! Plenty cold at your place this morning Fred. The thermomrteron my back porch says -10. So that makes it about -20 up at the bush. Our sugarhouse is 1760 Ft. above sea level and 1200 Ft. higher than my house. Does anyone out there have one that is higher? Most of our taps are higher than the sugarhouse. Thats why we're 10 degrees colder than Burlington on average. Now it's going to warm up, we should have some sap next week!

Yup so the next ZAP to the ole system is coming this weekend up in the upper 40's.

Next week looks like we may have overnite lows above freezing, then we will want just a touch of this cold back during overnite only.Crazy weather, but I don't buy global warming. When it takes thousands of years to swing you can not judge a 20 or 30 year temp swing of 1 degree and claim anything valid.

Well we've decided to start tapping tomorow. This weather is weird you really don't have a clue what it's going to do. If we put the spouts in the trees this weekend they'll be good till the 3rd week in April. Never seen sugaring last that long here. The weather forecast looks good but in the past few years we haven't gotten the highs they predicted. It's still early here. Last year we tapped on the 11th 12th &13th of march and we didn't make any syrup for about a week. But there is that sence of relief after your done tapping. You know that in 4 or 5 weeks tou will be done. Good luck everyone!

supposed to be in the 20's every night thru sunday. how much freeze can the daffodils and tulips take? all my raspberrys and blueberries and grapes have open buds, and the strawberries are takin off... what should i do about that? cover it all every night?
maple flats
04-04-2007, 06:36 PM
Strawberries will suffer if it drops to about 29, if you can't cover them put a sprinkler out to keep them wet, ice will form and you must maintain sprinkling til it all melts. This will protect about 5 extra degrees. Another way is to cover them to hold the frost off, row covers, old sheets whatever, or re mulch with straw but you must remove it as soon as the sun starts to get warm on them. As for the blueberries, they are higher off the ground and are safe down to about 25-26 degrees, a sprinkler also protects them. When sprinkling use an impact sprinkler head with a 9/64 nozzle and at least 60 psi water pressure. If you have a lot put a sprinkler every 60' in every direction. If you need irrigation pipe or impact heads I have about 4 acres worth for sale, I used to grow strawberries. My blueberries are late enough that I have little or no problem with frost and no longer use these.

A cool + 20 here this AM. Going to a high of 33 today. This break was not wanted but needed. I had to replace the 400 foot water line to the sugarhouse. The old one was seasonal and a stone had put a hole in it. The new one is now inside 4" pvc. When doing the backhoe work there was still frost about 24" down. Under the areas that are plowed clear of snow the line is down 7 1/2' otherwise the average is 5 1/2'. As I type this the water heater is warming up in the SH so I can clean my syrup pan this PM.

We have the same thing going on here in Lincoln,VT. Looks like it might start running again Tue. or Wed. We're kind of hopeing the syrup will lighten up, we have made way too much dark syrup and no where near enough light, out of 585Gal. 500 is dark amber or B. I don't think warm January's are conducive to good sugaring, (any thoughts anybody) I guess we'll see next week how things pan out. We chased out the rig and every thing is clean. I don't mind a two part season as long as the second part is better!
Homestead Maple
04-08-2007, 09:20 AM
I believe from what I've seen of the past 5 years that extended warm periods during what is normally winter season, does affect the trees for sure. To much dark syrup at times. The trees need to freeze up the beginning of December and for the most part stay that way until the end of February, at least for around this area any way. A little break in the action during the sugaring season is welcomed especially a cold one to help bring the syrup grade to lighter syrup. Last year a cold spell and some snow, (over 8" the 4th of April, same as this year) gave me another 10 days of boiling to where the season for us ended April 16th. I'd go along with April 20th being my last day this year, so long as the syrup is good!!
