I recently purchased a home built wood stove that was made out of 1/4 inch steel. My plan for it was to make i into an arch. It has some fire brick in it and I thought it would be a great place to start. My plan is to weld steel so I have an angle up and then fab a make a place for the pan to sit. I am looking for any ideas or photos from other home made steel arch's I was thinking about using stove gaskets around the top where the pans sit but didn't know if I should use arch paper or not?? Last thought I had was should I brick the area under the pan (I plan on bricking the fire box) Thanks for any help you can give.

This is what I did for my build...will have to be in 2 messages or so because of the number of pictures limitations.

Stove gaskets work just fine under the pan. I would use ceramic blanket insulation under the pan. Brick absorbs too much of the heat. The ceramic blanket will "push" more of your BTUs up into the pan and give you a better boil.

I agree...under my larger back pan I filled the tub with kids playground sand in a slope from the front to the back near the stack, then place ceramic blanket on top of the sand. I also put pieces of the blanket along the sides of the big tub and it REALLY reduced the heat you feel coming out of the sides of the arch and the pan area. I wanted to keep the heat where it belongs.

I took a look at the ceramic blankets (never heard of them till today) How thick should it be and where on the arch should it be?
