We are from Western NC, only tapping red maples, anyone use red maples for tapping? How were the results?

Lots of us do. The can be a little finicky, but will make some fine syrup.

95% of my maples are reds. Syrup tastes fine. Sugar content is lower than sugar maples but if it's what you have, Tap them and Enjoy !

Judy, are you using buckets or taps and jugs or lines? Red will produce less sap under regular conditions I have found in the past, but if you put them on 3/16 line with a good slope the natural vaccume will really increase your yield. How many taps do you have? Lee

With reds your results will vary from tree to tree. Some trees will run good, some will run a little and some won't run at all when tapped with buckets. Red maple syrup has very good flavor so the effort will be worth it if you can find enough trees that will run. Tap a lot of them if you've got the trees and taps.

Thank you for the advice. We used jugs this year, but will use tubing next year. We have a small backyard slope with 8 trees, but plenty of tasty syrup. One tree did not produce, maybe next year.
