The cream machine worked perfectly tonight. Made 8 lbs of cream in one batch and I'm sure i could do double that next time.
The motor is a half horse 3450 rpm free
40:1 gear reduction off an old garage door opener free
3/4 oberdorfer gear pump ebay $80
the funnel came from moonshine distiller.com $89.00
lovejoy connection from gear reduction to gear pump ebay $19.00
then the assortment of stainless fittings tri clamp connection and 3 way valve came from brewershardware.com $113.00

I thought I might need a 3/4 or 1 hp motor but the 1/2hp seemed to work just fine.

Showing my newbie-ness here. What the heck is maple cream and how do you make it. Obviously with a motor and a funnel but more detail please. ;) It sounds like something I want to eat.

Nice build. I had thought of building one but the ones available use a 1" pump which are a little more expensive. If you are making it work with a 3/4" pump with no problems, I may venture to build one.

So far it has worked perfectly. Got a batch ready to go for tomorrow, so we will see how it goes.

This is the pump I ordered. It has stainless gears. Not brass gears like the oberdorfer. The added bonus was that it did not say out of stock when I ordered mine and they sent me a 1" with 3/4" bushings.

What pump did you get? I don't see a picture or a link.

Whoops! Here is a link. Shows it out of stock. I know there were other vendors when I bought mine.

4 seasons ago, I took the gear pump/motor off my filter press and had the idea of using it for a gear pump cream machine. It's been under my work bench since. I was cleaning out the sugarhouse before the season started, asked myself why it was still kicking around, and took it to the dump. I saw this thread, and remembered why I'd kept it...

So, I make cream with a candy machine, but have been unhappy with it. It's hard to get consistent batches from start to finish. It's also an old candy machine with the wooden frame and such. I'm going to have a s/s frame made up for it this summer, and recently I had an epiphany as I was making a batch of cream...why not have the candy machine be convertible to a gear pump cream machine. What do you think? The gear pump machine's come with a 1/2hp motor. Is a 40:1 reducer typical? The candy machine's, what size motor do they have? The tag on the motor's worn off, so I can't read it. I think it has a 60:1 reducer. Pull the pig mount off and mount the gear pump/hopper in it's place. I think the benefit would be to have another machine kicking around the sugarhouse, and maybe save a few bucks on a motor/reducer/stand build.

Your candy machine sounds like mine. I believe the reduced motor speed is 60 rpm. When I built my gear pump machine I found it to be too slow. It did not work great for making cream and with the slow speed it would not pump water around to clean. I ended up using my old filter press motor and used a jack shaft to get the speed right.

Very nice. In the process of researching this idea I found a 1/2: stainless steel pump on Craigslist and bought for $ 75. I also have a SS 15:1 reduction gear. Any opinions on running this 1/2" pump, 1750 rpm motor reduced 15:1 ? Would end up with about 114 rpm.
