We would like some advice on this. Seems as though our filter is not letting the syrup pass through as easily now. We have filtered 4 batches of syrup this season. We always rinse the filter in near boiling water after each batch and let air dry . Thanks in advance for any advice.

Actually boil the filter this will allow the sediment sand niter to be reabsorbed into the clean water and clean the filter better than just hot water. Also just before using the filter, dip in boiling water ( back pan) to wet it entirely through. This will help filter faster as it is already hot.

Back when I filtered with them, I would hang them inside my flue pan hood between filterings. Always kept them wet, hot, and any residual syrup would just go back in the pan .

And remember ... once the inside of the filter .. always the inside of the filter.

Thanks M.D., I wasn't aware of the inside is always the inside rule.

When we used these for years we rinsed like you do in hot water and then used a forceful stream of hot water from a sprayer on a hose to push most of the sediment out of the filter. Also turned the filter inside out and did the same again.

I store rinsed filters in the freezer then they are ready to use. I also wash the nitre out by hand, but then put them in washing machine on gentle cycle with very hot water, spin, and put into freezer. Make sure to run a cold rinse, or two, through your washing machine first to make sure no soap is in machine. You should also use several prefilters with the wool filter.

Are you using orlon filters? I use a paper pre-filter and an orlon filter. I though them in the washer. Hot cycle with no soap and extra rinse. Then throw them in the dryer. They come out great every time.
