View Full Version : Steam pipe through cupola?

Ok guys, I'm looking for opinions here, with the addition of the new evaporator, my cupola has a hard time keeping up when I can't have both doors open due to wind, so the question is, if I was to run a pipe slightly larger than the flue pan pipe up through the roof of the cupola, so my flue pan pipe can slide inside it when I lift my hood, would it look horrible? This way I would only have my syrup pan hood venting into the cupola. What do you think? 13012

Do it i ran my hood thru cupola one yr and loved it , then changed cupola size and just ran pipe up into it !!! I hate it gets the wood all soaked and drips pitch and crap all over hood , it will be going back thru roof next yr

I do something similar. 2x6. Syrup pan vents direct to cupola Hood over flue pan vented through a telescoping steam stack, up to rafters and angled into cupola. Not through roof. I think the chimney effect of the flow through the stack and into the cupola actually makes the cupola draw better.
You will get condensation in the stack, so make the lower telescoping part larger so you don't end up with up lots of condensate on top of your hood.

I think I will go ahead and put the flue pan pipe up through the roof, thanks guys

Before you cut a hole in your roof you might try closing off the space between the pipes and the framing. You would cut down the amount of air that was not steam going through your cupola. It might keep your sugar house warmer also.

Looks like you have a very large pipe in the finish pan hood.
I would recommend through the roof with the pipe. But I am not sure that is going to be your answer to the steam. My theory is that the hood needs to be designed such that it minimizes air going into the hood and cooling it and the steam pipe. If mostly hot steam is in the hood/ pipe system it will draw good.
BTW nice looking sugarhouse reminds me a lot of ours.

Oldmanmaple, are you saying close off some of the space at the bottom of the cupola around the pipes? Sugarmaker, thank you, I love the looks of an old school shack, thanks!

Yes, some or all. With the hoods you really don't need that big hole in the roof Try it with poly first and then if it works, do something more permanent. The idea is to reduce the excess air coming into the sugar house and going up through the cupola. By doing so you will increase the draft in the vent, which should remove more steam. What ever you do pitch it so the condensate will drain off. You should be able to leave the doors open. Btw my 30x8 has a 12" vent on the syrup pan thats up about 16" like yours and a 10" on the flue pan. And If you do go thru the roof it isn't the worst thing, you wouldn't have to leave it like that in the off season.
