View Full Version : How to insulate my arch?

I just purchased a Mason 2 x 4 xl arch and pan. I used the pan over a homemade arch last weekend because it arrived just a few days before and I didn't have time to brick the arch before the weekend. Now that I have it and am looking at where it will reside I think I may have to move it over the next season or two. Bricks are heavy, especially when affixed permanently. Does anyone have input on ceramic fiber board (2" thick, from McGills Warehouse or other supplier) to use for lining my arch to make it easier to move? Wondering if I could cut it to fit and line it so it could be removed until I have a permanent place for the arch. Will that protect the arch? Will it stand up to the heat? How tough is it when throwing logs on it? Maybe brick the bottom and part of the sides to deal with the contact of logs and use board nearer the exhaust? I've used up my quota of question marks, but I appreciate any input. My guess is I should use bricks because it's what works best, but just trying to see if other options could make sense until I have everything in a permanent location. Thanks!

board or blanket is good, but you really should brick it also where you put the wood to protect the insulation.

Mason builds his arch for that 1/4 arch paper then bricks. Call him and he will set you in the right direction.

Thanks, but I didn't word my question very well. Instead of a blanket and bricks, does a 2" thick ceramic fiber board have the ability to function in place of the bricks? Is it sturdy enough to put the wood on or will it break up? I appreciate your input!

The ceramic board is not rugged enough to withstand wood hitting it. You use it to insulate the firebox, but you have to put brick over it to protect it.
