View Full Version : Fire Brick Cost
Where does everyone get their fire brick from and aprox how much does it cost? Looking online I see most selling bundles of 6 for $30 or $5/brick. The bricks are 9" x 4.5" x 1.25". That seems like a lot.
I have also seen this one brick from Lowe's that is significantly larger and cheaper. It's 24" x 8-3/8" x 8-1/4" and cost $2.56.

I'm skeptical if the size is correct based on the picture.
Just curious where everyone else is buying theirs and for how much.
Thanks

Look for a concrete block supplier nearby. They will either have them or know where to get them. Check Craigslist also to see if anyone is selling them. I just got some last week from a mason who had a pile of leftovers in his yard. I think new they will go for about $2.00 + a brick. I bartered with the mason, got 68 full bricks for some yard work in the summer (and a bottle of syrup).

I got mine from Tractor Supply Co. a couple years ago and they were $2. I just googled "tractor supply fire brick" and the splits 4.5"x9"x1.25" list for $2.99 but are on sale for $1.79. Hopefully there is a TSC near you in CT.

FYI - I googled alternative to fire brick and it turns out the old red clay bricks work pretty good. I use them and they are great.
google - fire brick alternative for more info
roxul insulation will not burn up to 2200 degrees so splitting the 2x4 batts and laying it inside your arch under the red clay bricks will really do the job at a very practical cost. experiment. mabe use for the pan seal as well instead of blanket or rope.
oh ya.... firebricks can be cut with a good concrete or tile saw and be used for arch walls where you may not want a full brick.
my red clay bricks from last year stood up to the test and no cracking.

I just paid $2.20 at a place in MA. Maybe not the cheapest but I drive by the place everyday to work :D
Lowes also stocks split bricks for about $2.60.
Bascoms sells them at about $2 for the half bricks last I checked, and no sales tax. Beats any pricing around me that I checked, including a concrete products place. Worthwhile checking out if you are in the area.

Do you have a TractorSupply near you? they have brick for $1.79 . I got mine at the local shop in Calais ME last year when they were on sale for $0.99 ea. if you have time to wait you could get a great deal.
I guess I need to check in with some of the local stone yards to see if they sell it. I just have never ran across it before I knew anything about it. There is a TSC about 30-40 min away.
I'm running a concrete block arch again this year, but was hoping to protect some of the block with firebrick. Although its not looking economical. I was hoping to buy some this year and reuse it for my planned arch next year.
Next time I stop in Lowes I'll check out what the product is that I linked earlier.

we were all set to get our splits from Tractor Supply. But they don't sell full size bricks. Fortunately, hubby found a local manufacturer just 20 minutes from us, and they sell split for $1.20 and fulls for a $1.25. I'm not sure how he found the store that he may have called a pottery store and ask them about fire brick. Anyplace that sells bricking for outside furnaces.
