My 4th year, and I never tapped before MAR 22nd. No harm with new CV's

I am checking my five weather sources for this week, and will record actual temps. I have found the NWS to be most reliable. One can select your LAT/LONG and it calculates altitude also.
I have 130 taps in on vacuum and hope to get that many in SUN for this early FEB run and test the RO
Of course, I would have liked to put the night/day temps, but I didn't and already spent to much time on this.....

It's tempting to start tapping trees now, however I think I will hold off for at least another two weeks. I live in West Newbury and the weather here for the next several days look great. I'm just going too hold off because I don't want to get stuck with eighty buckets on trees and yielding nothing cuz it's too cold.

agreed steven- ive done the tap and wait around game, its not fun waiting for sap to hit lines. actually my test tree yielded maybe a quart, wide open tree. i don't think it was as warm as they has hoped, maybe 42 and didn't hit that ti 3pm . i know Saturday was cooler than expected. be interesting to see how this forecast all plays out.....hoping it trends cold

I wonder how depressed weather forcasters get when they are constantly wrong. My Essex VT forecast for today is for a high temp of 46 degrees. Well , this morning started off at 5:30 am at 58 degrees.

They don't care. They still have a job after being 100% wrong. It's something they get used to!

In all seriousness, I know there are to many variables to predict well in some locations. I lived on the west coast for many years, and the weather was very predictable, and forecasts reliable. My brother visited for a year or two, and left because the weather was so boring.
I have my own PWS on Weather Underground, a MADIS station monitored by the NWS, and love watching the weather changes. I live in the Greens at 2000', and there are no forecasts available that compensate for the altitude, and adiabatic lapse rate except the NWS. All the commercial weather sites use a forecast 10-15 miles away and 1400' below me.
The NWS lets me pinpoint a location, and altitude and makes the adjustments. It usually does show cooler temps than all the others, and therefore usually more accurate. Then there is the frequent times of temperature inversions, when the lower valley warm air rises and the cold air settles.

I had 51 degrees at my house today at an elevation of 1200 feet. Much warmer than predicted. It seems there forcasting gets worse every year. LOL.

*****UPDATE*****

Not bad forecasting overall I would say, with the exception of Thursday, which was six days away when the forecast was made

ACTUAL... 43/31.......47/29........39/32.......51/31........49/17

SAP RUN.....240g Sun/Mon.........150g.........150g.........200g thru Fri AM

I am so glad I tapped. I tested the RO and dumped the first 240g, and then processed over 500 gallons to make about 7 gallons of amber on what was eventually 320 taps.
