My father picked this up at a junk shop or flea market a while back, the guy said it was a sap bucket, but we both kinda thought it seems a bit small for that, plus the ice issue. Just wondering if anyone here has seen one before and if not a sap bucket then what was it for?

Definitely not sap buckets. That is a urinal from the 1800's

That is a sap bucket if you hang it on a tree. No worse than kitty litter bottles or bleach bottles.

Jimsudz are you joking or for real? Hard to picture exactly how that would work with the curved back,

I don't know, but that was my guess as well. If it were hung with the curve to a post then it would not spin, and become a moving target.

Now, don't forget, not very long ago, urine was collected for use. Gunpowder, dye, for example.

Anything legible on that label? try various light on it maybe.

No luck making out much on the label, pretty well damaged

There was a sap bucket made at one time that was curved on the back like this one to fit against the tree, however it did not have the big duck bill lip on it. I don't see how this could work for sap with the big lip as it would fill the bucket with rain and snow.

Was the "duck bill" there to help with emptying it? Maybe you wouldn't have to reach so far trying to get it into the opening on the gathering tank?

Interesting piece anyway.
