Not tapped yet but I do have 80 new taps on 3/16" tube I ran on a hill out back and a new pre-heater and Revolution pan on order from Leader. Sure hope it gets here soon because this week and next are starting to look like 2012 when it was over before it started!

I'm going to hold off awhile. See what February brings.

I'm going out of town this week so I would miss the weekend regardless. Just seeing who was getting a jump start.

Same here. I never tap before the second week of February.
The second sap starts flowing early, we end up getting a week-long freeze.

I have only plowed the driveway 3 times this year… winter is definitely not over

I'm in southern Ohio and I tapped Monday January 25th and have had some sap every day. I have boiled down 100 gallons so far, but no big runs. My best collection was 45 gallons off 95 taps, but today looks like it could beat that. I'll know tomorrow. Sugar is around 1.4%.

with the long range forecast for northern ohio starting mid week nxt. week looks like 10 days + of arctic cold. To me this seems like a normal season will be the rule this year

All in here in South Madison. Just could not wait any longer, tapped about 400 today and will finish tomorrow. It ran today and tapered off later in the day. Nice freeze tonight . The wife said she knows when to tap from now on "when the moon is in the 7th house and Jupiter aligns with Mars" cannot be any worse than watching the weather forcasts. A lot of squirrel damage since Nov. Here we go, good luck to all.

I think the early tappers will not be disappointed this year. Looks like high 40's today with rain coming later...then sun and freeze through the weekend.
Who cares about next week - there's gonna' be some syrup made this week.

I'll update since my post last Thursday......Friday and saturday were good runs, but over night Saturday was a monster. I collected alomst 125 gallons from that run alone. It quit yesterday so now I get a day or too of rest. I made syrup 6 days in a row and two of those were real good days. It's in full forward here in southern Ohio.

I agree buckeye. I was sap swamped over the weekend. Now it's time for a lil catch up. Total of 400 gals of sap boiled down. I'll have a chance to finish and bottle this week.

nice work southern boys!

Im ok waiting for the 'normal' season to start; it gives me more time to get things ready.
i have to say, it was really nice being in the woods tightening the side ties on the tubing without 2' of snow on the ground.

good luck!

The last two days have been busy with two short afternoon runs. Sap is at 43 to 1, not a great start for sugar for this bush. Second year with low sugar early in the season. We usually start at around 34 to 1. We should get a nice run tomorrow. Vacuum pulling ice as the sun set tonight, caught that just in time. One tank to start in the morning and fresh sap by noon. Sixteen gals. Finished so far, very light and great flavor. Hope everyone is having a good start.

Got all of my 830 taps in. Was really running good today and I expect a flood of sap tomorrow. It was at 2% which is extremely high for my woods.

UP to 35gals of syrup and all light. Sap still at 2deg Brix not very good start that way. Syrup is good and real creamy, stays on the tongue. We really needed this down time today. Looks like some winter left with this cold spell and no big warm up after that, good sugaring if it holds. Rest now and reload for the next round.

Rookie yr. Boiled 7 gallons first time which made 1.5 pints.boiled 9 gallons today and made 23 ounce approx...
Im using 8 ounce glass containers and not sure how to bottle correctly?
I cleaned all with dawn and rinsed in hottest h20 really well.
Then i let syrup cool to room temp, then filtered/filled totally full and refrigerated right away.
How will this keep?
Has great color and taste...
