A trick that some old winemakers I knew used for oaking wine was to use a glass carboy but put toasted oak chips in the bottom then fill with wine attach a lock with no headspace and let it mature. But if your looking for the evaporation that would take place through the wood of a real barrel you won't get that with this method. Jay

Bourbon barrels are available on Amazon.com and other sites but they aren't cheap. I was wondering how long the aging process takes and how to heat the syrup before it is barreled

They arent doing this for the burnt oak aging like alcohol. And not for any evaporation. They are hot packing the syrup onto used barrels to get the flavor from the previous contents. Then bottling and selling as a NON PURE MAPLE SYRUP.

There are a TON of small / micro distilleries popping up all over the south. A lot of them aren't using the typical big barrels like the larger main stream distilleries are. They are using smaller 3-5 gallon barrels with have more surface area and cuts down on aging time to convert to a bourbon or brown whiskey. These should be available. I had a BB add maple syrup from michigan that was SØOOOO good. There is a brewery from Michigan (Founders) that puts a stout in the barrels after they have had the maple in them. Incredible beer I've heard.

I will look around. We have a lot of microbreweries here in Maine, I wonder if they would like to collaborate on this.
Maybe I need to go on the "bourbon trail" down by your neck of the woods and see what I can come up with for barrels. There are worse chores to do before the season...
