Looking like 40's all next week. Wtf. Do you tap with these temps or hold off.

I wondering the same thing. Could be that the whole season is moving up a month or that this is just a late "January Thaw". I'm considering tapping 1/2 now and 1/2 in a few more weeks. Let me know once you can confirm what the weather is going to be. :)

i would wait another few weeks, especaily if your using buckets, to me spotty runs with minimal sap aren`t worth shorting the real season for..... just use the excitement of decent looking weather to drive yourself into the `` its almost here mode`` good luck

The weather gets weirder every year, but I wouldn't tap yet. The temps may get into the 40s but the trees take a while to thaw out. Not worth tapping now, unless you're really small scale and want to experiment. Last couple years, didn't get decent runs until early or even mid March, but have had a few years of mid to late February. Who knows what next month will bring.

I'm operating on the "tap date does not affect total season sap production (certain restrictions and seasonal differences may apply)", but I can understand if some are holding off for logistical reasons (fear of freezing their setup, snow cover, etc).

Thanks for posting this. I just re-read it this morning and was going to post it as well. It definitely made my decision for me. I start today.

OTOH, the 15 day forecast is perfect sap weather too. Very weird. Glad I'm not tapping this year.

well i watched the weather everyday and all i can say is WOW ..... it looks great to me. my last reply was when the weather was looking ok for 4 days now its almost 2 weeks of decent weather im shocked but close to ready maplewise anyway, ill put out a few test taps and see what the results are before i tap- in completely. i was hoping to finish up a cordwood dump body fab job for a friend before this good weather hit, but it has landed right in front of us..... now its time to do what we all are here talking about.....let the chips fly and place your spouts wisely, its sugarin time !!!

If I was ready to go, I would be tapping this afternoon. Seeing as I am still building the floor for my sugar house and have to travel the 2nd week of February I'm going to hold off.
