I ordered from CDL. Shipping costs for glass are killer. I picked them up at the closest store to decrease cost. There is a discount for volume.

Depends on what you want. I buy plain syrup bottles from Gamber container in Lancaster Pa. But they don't ship. If you want some of the fancy leaf bottles or such the maple industry uses you will need to go to a dealer. If you buy in the spring after season you can usually get 10% off.

I buy from Gamber, they in fact do ship. I buy them pallet loads at a time. 180 cases on a pallet.

Are you supposed to clean/sanitize these glass jars, or can you just fill them and cap the right out of the box like bacon jugs?

I do not wash the new bottles.

Washing is an option, but you should preheat them before filling. I heat mine to 200 degrees. If you use etched bottles it is absolutely necessary to wash them out with hot water.

I've had trouble with small bottles molding during storage... Some sooner than others...
I've thought about setting them in a shallow pan of high temp water for a few minutes after filling and capping...
How do you preheat the bottles ?

I pre heat my oven to 200 degrees then place bottles on flat pan for 30 to 45 minutes . Syrup is at 180 to 190 degrees when filling. Lay bottles on their side for say 15 minutes. I have never had a problem with mold doing this. Good luck!

I found a great way to heat the bottles, this year I got a roaster and it will hold the 12 oz bottles about 24 with the lid on with a slight gap and keep them hot , I dont use the steam pan just dry and it works great ! at 200 deg !

Same here put the jars in the oven 200% and make sure you turn them on the side so it sterilize the cap sounds like if you have mold then you are not tipping them on there side.

Do you fill the bottles while they are hot. Last year was my first year and I just used canning jars and boiled them prior to filling, I don't think most of my jars were warm when I filled them. After I filled them with 190-200 degree syrup I put all the jars in a hot bath back in boiling water for 10 minutes. We're these steps not necessary and can I just get away with pre heating the bottles in the oven and filling while the bottle is hot if necessary.
