I have to draw and move sap from another yard and have to get another storage tank to transport it. I am trying to find the average weight of raw sap. I found on the internet the weight of water is 10 pounds, imperial gallon, but from the ratio required to make a gallon of syrup, 11 pounds, the math didn't seem right for the weight of the sap. Don't want to over load my trailer I am using. I suppose the weight may have to do with the sugar content but just wondered if there was an average.. Thanks in advance, Jack

I think water is just below 8.5 pounds per gallon.

Original poster was talking imperial gallons. Bigger than us gallon. I'm guessing sap would be pretty close to water.

I'm not sure, but I calculate the weight of a US gal. of 2.2% sap at 8.5 lbs. I'm not sure where I got that number, I may have just guessed based on the weight of water.

This may be the wrong way, but my twisted math says that (US gallons) if water weighs 8.3# and syrup weighs 11.3# that means syrup (if at 69% sugar) has 3# of sugar in it, or 48 ounces sugar. Then 1% sugar will be .696 oz and 2% is 1.38 oz. If correct then my 8.5 lbs is a little high but safe. You then need to convert US gal to Imp Gal. Go online and search to find a program for that.

An Imperial gallon is 5 quarts. So 8.3 lbs times 1.25 = 10.375 lbs.

Hi John,
I checked out your link to your pics. Great job and looks awesome. I also like your finishing remark. We have one big beautiful Country North of the border and we all bleed the same, red......thanks again for the weight. Seems close enough to water so will need to make two trips. Jack

Thank you to all our American cousins that replied. As I had mentioned to John previously it seems close enough to water. It was fun though seeing the converting to Canadian gallons from US gallons. Think that's tough? Try having two sets of tools. One for Metric and the other SAE. Hope your 2016 is great. Jack

JP,
We have had metric for many years here. A 1980 model Ford pickup had both metric and SAE on the same vehicle.
I was working on a steam valve at church Saturday. The brass packing nut on this relatively ancient , American made valve was not 7/16 or 1/2. 12 MM fit perfectly. Well, a Crescent wrench fit too, but rounded off the corners.......

My toolboxes are all full of sae & MM wrenches. Tractors are usually mm no mater where you think they are made. LOL

Lets not talk about where trucks are put together ether. 18 mm is perfect but 3/4" is loose. Why not have used a 19 MM bolt head????

You're welcome. I am a 7th generation Canadian, born in St Catharines, who immigrated to the states with Dad, Mom and 5 bros and sisters in the early 60's. Dad was a Canadian foot soldier with Hamilton Infantry who marched across Europe in WWII. Upon making it back home 4 years later, he promised Mom they would have a large family and one day move to the United States of America. He made good on both counts...All of our cousins etc, and one brother who moved back, are still there.

To be exact, 1 imp gallon = 1.2009 us gallon, and a imp gallon is 160 fl oz, us gallon is 128 fl oz, so the oz is not the same !

1 imp gallon of water is 10.02 lbs

and i hate 18 mm bolts on american cars... every standard metric sets came with 17mm and 19 wrenchs.. where do these engineer takes the mesurements of 18mm for brakes hex. bolts ???

And I was thinking my cell phone charts were wrong. Thanks on the 1.2.

Mower bolts are 18mm too worst size possible. 3/4 6 point impact wont remove them, 11/16 wont, 5/8 can be hammered on but then it takes 2-3 minutes to get the nut out with the vise...try finding an 18 mm impact socket and not pay $15-20 for it.

Be proud of your heritage!

I am Scottish...My wife says I am so tight I can squeeze a fart out of the buffalo on a nickel.

Breezy, you think you are tight? Two of my ancestors invented copper wire when they both saw a penny at the same time. And we call ourselves "frugal", not tight.
