I ran the Surge Alamo pump I have the other day to start checking the lines for leaks. After about 2 hrs +/- I heard what I thought was a clanking noise in the pump. THe pump was fairly hot to the touch. It was shut off for a few minutes and turned back on and the noise went away.
Is cooling an issue with these pumps? And if so what would be the next step in cooling the pump for long runs?

Cooling is a Big issue with these pumps,,the more Vacuum you pull the hotter they run,,anything above 16" is pushing it,,want to make sure your oilers are working perfectly,,you are useing oil thick enough for how hot it is out,,I had one get so hot it lit on fire and burned,,,live and learn (hopefully)

What would you use for oil to help with cooling?

Two things you can do to help it run cooler. One is get a pulley (if it already doesn't have one) that has fins designed to blow air towards the pump as it runs.
The other thing that some have done is hang a box fan to blow air on it.
