Dead trees??

Not sure what happened to my maple trees. A cluster of them never got leaves. Others have minimal leaves. They are all in the same cluster. There are 16 trees affected, but only 9 of them were tapped last year. Any ideas???

Did the ground where those trees are become wet?

My father and I lost two nice ones because of a change in drainage, and then a spring bubbled up nearby, which made the ground there soggy. Maples don't like excessive wetness. They require "dry feet" so to speak.

The small and thin leaves and eventual die-off is just what ours did. In two seasons they were dead.

I see some trees that have died as well and am at a loss for why. Between the road and a creek on a steep bank down the road from where I live, several sugar maples grow along the creek. The power company did have workers trim trees along there last summer since the wires run overhead. Last fall before trees began to turn, 2 or 3 of these maples began to just die. The leaves just turned brown and they never did anything this spring. Two of those trees were 3-4 inch diameter trees and one was about 10 inches. This spring another 4 inch tree leafed out normally and then did the same thing about June 1. The dead trees are all next to each other and the soon to be dead tree is next to them. There are still some healthy looking maple trees there but it is hard to imagine why those trees that were all healthy looking until last fall would be dead now. Close inspection would be difficult and would require monkeying over the guard rail and ignoring all the poison ivy down the steep bank. Short of scattering Spike pellets down the bank (doubtful but possible), I would like to know the cause. I walk this way often and wonder about each time.

Disease. cannot remember the exact name, happens suddenly. good possibility, unfortunantly, the trees with poor leaving may not make it to the next year.

Thanks Doc. Could I tell for sure any other way other than when the tree is cut down? Speaking of vehicle activity in the woods, the woods that these trees are close to is primarily sugar maples where I hang several buckets. Most of the year it is a recreational woods that sees a lot of 4-wheeler traffic. I haven't seen any ill effects from the traffic - although they may be unseen.

The best confirmation is to look at the wood when you cut it down to see the streaks.
