I have a potential new customer who is a baker and says her vegan customers would be opposed to my use of Atmos defoamer as it may contain a small amount of animal products. She recommends coconut oil. Has anyone here used it as a defoamer? Do you use a similar amount? Does it affect the taste?
I would almost have to use it in my first batches of syrup because the atmos might be staying in the flue pan for who knows how long.

I just searched and spotted the thread form 3-22-15. I'll see what she says about canola or sunflower oil

I collected this last season using pails that had coconut oil in them I cleaned them out but could still smell that coconut. Desperate I just used them and found when I was boiling I had almost no foam. I suspect a small amount of oil still remained and was in the sap. No off odor and no odd taste in the syrup. I was actually thinking of using coconut oil as a defoamer from now on. Jay

We use Canola due to allergies and recommendations of an allergist.

I may be wrong but the word I got from the local association was that we could use atmos 300 or the powered defoamer and we need not declare it on the bottle. Anything else that is used needs to be declared on the label or bottle.
