I know someone in the past has done this and posted a couple of pictures. But, now I can't find the thread and I have a couple of questions.
If anyone knows what I'm talking about could you help me out? I have the fuel tank and want to use a 24x72 inch pan.

Did you search in the Homemade Maple Equipment forum? That's where most of those projects are detailed.

Just took some of the top and welded it to the back of the tank to make it long enough.

Unless you need to get rid of the tank, consider just making an angle steel frame and screwing on some sheet metal. Cheap, easy to weld, less annoying to build, and you get exactly what you want: Just the size you want and flat surfaces for bricking.

I had a question about making an arch out of a tank like that when I was getting started. I got a reply with one awesome build that had pictures on a photobucket page with a link to it. I just did a search and went back to it but I did not see the pictures I wanted. Since I didn't ask my kids if I was doing something wrong since I am "challenged" in this area, I will try to have a link to the post so you can look for yourself. I hope the pictures can be found somewhere - they were good. http://mapletrader.com/community/showthread.php?14047-Fuel-Oil-Tank-Evaporator&highlight=fuel+oil+tank+evaporator. I do think the page is too old and those pictures are gone but in case someone knows more than I do about pulling them up there is the link that TimJ sent me in 2011.

Thanks for posting the video. If you were doing your tank arch again is there anything you would change? I plan to follow your design as best I can.
Thanks, Dennis McGill
