Here's a question: is there any deciduous tree that produces sap that is poisonous? Tree identification is not one of my strengths. So I worry about tapping non-maples by accident--not in terms of wasting my time (which is, it seems, one of my strengths), but in terms of safety. Thanks.

I personally haven't heard of any and I would think if there was any they would have been discussed at one time or another on this forum. Try doing a search. If you struggle with ID'ing maples then mark your trees in the summer or during foliage season when you have the leaves to look at. The only non maple around that has leaves similar to maples in this area are sicamores which are easily identified by their whitish gray splotchy trunks.

Not in the northern states or Canada. It's far more likely that you just won't get any sap or the sap will just be bitter.

Ok thank you. Yes I mark them in the summer but then around Feb I sometimes find a few more...
