Have this little guy coming up in some landscaping. Doesn't look like my 128 million silver maple seedlings that have started nor does it look like my 127 million Norway maple seedlings either. I also tore off a small leaf and the sap is clear so that rules out Norway. I don't have anything else that's mature besides silver and norways, but I can't see all the way into my neighbor's woods. Thanks in advance for any help. Glad to have this site as a resource (and motivator).

Red maple acer rubrum , although there is usually more serration along the edges on mature trees

The leaves of young seedlings can and often do fool even the better of those who try to I.D. trees. That does look like a sugar maple, but let it get 2-3' tall, and a little later into the season to be sure. At the end, it has opposite branching which is a good trait to look for in any maple. At that size, you should live long enough to tap it, just plan out 30-40 years. Maybe your 5 yr. old will tap it too, and the following generations as well.

Jimsudz, #3 & #4 looks a lot like what I was thinking were silvers. They're near my lot line where I've got a ton of silvers. So, I took a peek at the neighbor's trees and one sure looks like a sugar maple.

Dwight, thanks for those pics of your reds. I transplanted four reds from my parents farm and I've got variation in all four of those so some looks like yours and some are more like Jim's.

Attached is a pic of seedlings along my lot line.

Thanks everyone for the info. Sugar, red, silver...happy with any and all.
