I have some sap from around a 1.5 weeks old that I have in a bucket under my deck. It has been warm here the last few days. Is there any way to tell if it is definitely bad without boiling?

Why not put a cup of it in a small pot on the stove. It will boil in a couple of minutes. One whiff and you'll know. If it's really funky, you'll find out when you take the lid off your bucket.

I do what Karen suggests, but with a small stainless cup and a propane torch. Just a tiny amount of sap and it will boil nearly instantly.
Remember that cloudiness is not necessarily the end, but ropey or smelly sap should be thrown out.
