Just wondering those that use DE filter for sap, Do any of you add the de to the entire tank and mix it or do you make a slurry ina bucket and pour that in first. That is how I've alwas done it. I had another person tell me that he mixes in his tank. This time of the year I certainly can't get a lot through(3,000 to 4,000) it before it begings to plug. I might try doing that.

I just mix it in with syrup before filtering. Mixing it in well and continue to stir during filtering.

I have valves between the tank and filter and the drain for the tank so by closing to tank and open to drain it relieves the suction to the filter basket I then take the cover off and add DE there one cup at a time then crack the valve to the tank so a little stream comes in to filter basket and when it gets full I turn on the pump for a sec. or two and then add another cup of DE( the pump basically does the mixing) keep doing this till I have all the DE added that I want You can do this after the filter starts to clog and it gives new life with out flushing out the canister till your done filtering for the day I think hands down DE does the best job of filtering sap I run the same pre filters in my RO all season with no problem It does require a little more fussing to do but I think its worth it

I have a pipe with a funnel that tees off the feed from the tank to the pump/filter. I mix the de in a bucket and open the valve and dump it into the feed line.

I have a Hayward DE filter. Most common application is swimming pool filtration. But it can be used for many applications. I can't agree more it is the best method for filtering that I have ever used.It filters down to 3 to 5 microns. Like I said originally I mix up the amount of DE with sap in a five gallon contaiener and pour into the pump housing. The comparison I was looking to see if anyone does, was does anyone mix it into the storage tank. It doesn't sound like anyone does that. If I was to do that I think a lot of the DE would settle to the bottom of the tank be fore getting to the filter

Thanks for that . That's what this site is great for . Learn something all the time . As a ro is in my future, filtering sap was a big concern of mine . Like to see all the options !
