I'm thinking about adding on a candy kitchen and renovating this summer . has anyone ever used the hot water from a steam hood / preheater or steam away for heating their slab ?

Interesting...I thik the issue will be not having a consistant flow of heated water to the system. How about running a loop thru the hood to supplement the floors heat source when the evap is running. It takes a day to heat a slab to a constant temp. So for me boiling only 10-12 hours on a long day I would not get the area warm.
On the other hand you could use the wate heated water from these units to go thru a modine style heater and have fast heat. Or even heat a storage tank for heat source for the modine.

I was thinking to supplement the system that would be installed . I see a lot of hot water drain on the ground each season !

I think it would be heated when your least likely to be using it! As for radiant, i have it in my house and love it but for an intermitent use building the recovery is way too slow

I don't know how much heat you need...it was 85 degrees in my sugarhouse the last few days. I've piped that runoff from the pre-heater over to the sink. It gives me a couple of dishpans full of scalding hot distilled water all day long.

This would be for an addition on the north side of the existing sugar house . Separate room , we bottle a lot of honey , and it would also serve as a place to make maple cream etc., the room would be used daily. I've had my sugar house door closed most of this season !
