View Full Version : Using homemade RO in the off season

I got to thinking the other day it sure would be handy to have some clean RO water to use with my power washer as a spot free rinse when washing the bike etc. With my setup being portable on a hand truck and quick connect lines this should be easy enough to do. I figure the use in the summer would be nice to refresh the water inside periodically as well.

Now for the application and plumbing. It is easy enough for me to adapt to garden hose feed. I typically use tank feed, but doing this would require 2 tanks which I would like to avoid. Now to limit my waste water. Do I just tee my concentrate line back into feed line pre filter and let it loop?

I figured I would use one of my 65 gallon leg tanks to hold the water. Also not sure how I would keep the water from potentially going skunky from sitting?

Get a small pressure/holding tank and a faucet and have R/O water on demand!

If city water the clorine is bad for most membranes. Some well water can have much minerals too and plug them. Just a thought. And wastewater is part of the ro process i dont think you want to recirculate too much in depending how your unit is plumbed

We are on well water. I would sure think that my 5 micron filter would take care of any big stuff. That and I have never had any issues running the RO on home water to rinse tanks. I'd need a good bit more than a handful of gallons as my power washer is about 4.2 GPM.

You could use sap tanks for holding the distilled water.

Maybe you don't need a pressure washer to rinse with. Wash it like you were and use a reg hose from r/o to rinse?

I figured one of my sap tanks for the water, but how do I keep the water clean and stable? It would be stored in the garage and I'd hate to clean and dry it every time that I use it.

Why wouldn't it stay clean and stable if it's permeate? It's just nearly pure water, isn't it? There's nothing for microbes to feed on. We store 55 gallon HDPE barrels of well water in our basement for emergency potable water. We plan to just add some bleach if we ever have to resort to them.

I was under the impression that to store water it may need to be treated.

Any comments on whether my RO will function with "back pressure" on the concentrate line?

I would have say 50 psi inlet pressure from the well system and the concentrate will recirc into a tee at the inlet of the boost pump.
