Anybody use one and if so how big and what brand? I recently purchased a b3000 kubota. 30 hp. Wondering if that's the way to go instead of buying a whole new gas powered engine in addition to all of the other ones I already have.
I ran my splitter with a small gas engine because I would rather put hours on an engine I can replace for a few hundred instead of a few thousand. I put together a hydraulic power pack to run the splitter, round bale wrapper and tuber. Now that power pack has a 6 hp electric on it and it is much quieter.

I've used one for 10 years. Modified it to take a 32" lengths to match my furnace. Really like being able to drop it to the ground to roll on a big chunk and the ease on moving it place to place.
I have what ever the Northern tool brand used to be, American something or other. I have a horizontal my father uses a vertical of the same brand. I like that I can either split at waist height or drop it down and roll a piece on. My father sits on a chunk of wood and works sitting down. He backs the whole tractor into really big pieces of wood. One downside is I used to use a lot of fuel. I had my splitter on a IH 606 gas tractor. She'd drink 5 gals an hour splitting. But on a diesel fuel consumption isn't bad and I like that I can move the splitter easily.

My neighbour has a splitter for his 23hp Kubota. It's some type of a pump that mounts on the PTO that he connects the splitter hydraulic hoses to. The splitter works much faster than using the hydraulics on the tractor and he can run the tractor at a lower RPM.

A lot more fuel consumption per cord of wood. 5.5 hp Honda motor 2 stage pump 24 inch splitter=3 cords of wood split per gallon of fuel.

I have a Wallenstein that I use behind my Deere 3720. I'd rather put hrs on the fuel sipping Yanmar diesel than have to own another gas engine. Hydraulic flow from the tractor is what I would call OK. It's not going to set any speed records, but it is fast enough. I could add a pump and a tank, but what I have is dirt simple. I take the splitter to the wood. I can lay it down on the ground and roll big rounds onto the bed. I can drive forward as the drop zone gets cluttered.
We split 8-10 face a year so maybe 16-20 hrs operation??? on an engine that is serviced every 200hrs.
