My trees are really starting to produce and I may have to wait until Saturday to boil. I have two 50 gallon plastic barrels buried in snow right up to the rims. I know they stay very cold because there was a scrim of ice in the bottom of one of them for the last 2 weeks. Will the sap stay fresh for the next 3 days if stored there?11513

You should be just fine.

I have read that you treat it like milk and if you keep cold it can keep for up to two weeks. Smell and taste test....

If you have any concerns one trick is to place fozen plastic jugs of water (with strings) in your sap. Sounds like you will be fine

I froze some sap in tupperware containers, popped out the sap ice blocks and dropped them into my 35 gal drums when it got warm. I couldn't get the milk jug labels completely off and thought the paper/glue might ruin the sap.

I am almost out of storage, this is the most I have ever gotten in the two years I have been doing this. Do any of you store in rubbermade trashcans? I know there is a brute foodsafe one but I didn't know if any one was using anything else. We work so hard for this sap I don't want to mess it up.

Much cheaper to get food grade trash can liners and than fill them up then the plastic can is irrelevant. Just look for clear or opaque polyethylene with no recycled matrrial and your good to go. I got mine from american fabric filter i use them for my dust collectors and buy them in rolls of 50 They just happen to be food grade.
